Margaret Bixby

Obituary of Margaret Bixby

Margaret Bixby was born in her childhood home on Stoll Street in Netcong on September 14, 1930. Her middle name is still a mystery, could be Ann, could be Sophia. She was one of 13 children to Elizabeth and Augustine Dulio.

Margaret played various sports growing up, including field hockey where she got her teeth knocked out by an opponent's stick and basketball where she earned the nickname "Chut" or "Chuckers". She was self-described as a "nasty guard". She was a graduate of the Netcong High School Class of 1949.

She worked various jobs throughout her life, including bartending at The Seven Gables Tavern in Budd Lake, owner of Joseph's Home Cooking on Main Street in Stanhope, and secretary at Picatinny Arsenal. She worked as a Matron at Lenape Valley High School for 20 years and became the personal chef for the Lenape Valley football coaching staff. After retiring in 2000, she returned to work as a school bus aide and then worked in the cafeteria at Stanhope Public School. She worked into her 90's, occasionally substituting at the Lenape Valley Cafeteria. She drove until the age of 92… there wasn't a safe garbage can or dumpster (and allegedly a few parked cars) in her path.

She spent most of her life living on Stoll Street where she was regularly seen sitting on her porch most of the time happy… but at times screaming at passing motorists earning her title as "The Stoll Street Pitbull".

Margaret loved playing Bingo every Friday night. She and her sisters ran the concession stand for bingo at the Knights of Columbus in Netcong for over 30 years, serving sandwiches, cakes and coffee to the masses. She played the lottery every day and loved going to the casino with her siblings. She attended St Michael's Church in Netcong and spent many hours Sitting in Adoration with her sister Theresa.

She raised three sons, Edgar, Keith and Jimmy and was a second mother to many of their friends… no doubt a contributing factor to her lifetime battle with high blood pressure. She loved spending time with her grandchildren Jaime, Bub, Jimmy, Savannah and Norah and her great grandsons AJ and Bentley.

In lieu of flowers, buy yourself a lottery ticket or a tub of Haagen Das Butter Pecan ice cream.
