
Obituary of Joseph B. Sacco
Joseph B. Sacco, 89, of Franklin, NJ (formerly of Hopatcong), passed away on Monday October 20 at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in Chester, NJ.
Joe was born on September 9, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Gaetano and the late Filomena (Lamanna) Sacco. Joe served proudly in the United States Army, 43rd Armored Infantry Battalion, 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels" in Baumholder, Germany. Joe was retired from his position as Firefighter and Safety Specialist at Picatinny Arsenal after 34 years. He was also retired from serving as the Sussex County Fire Marshall. Joe enjoyed traveling to many countries around the world with his late wife, Carolyn.
In Joe's long history of loyal service to his communities, he was a lifetime member of the Hopatcong Fire Department serving for 43 years. He served as Department Chief and Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau. He was also a life member of the Sussex County Firemen's Association including serving as Vice President of the Sussex County Fire Chief's Association. Joe was also a life member of the Exempt Firemen's Association and the NJ State Firemen's Association where he served as Chairman of the Memorial Committee. Additional memberships include the Morris County Fire & Arson Investigation Association, and the Knights of Columbus St. Michael's Council #3665 of Netcong, Lake Hopatcong Elks Lodge #2109/782 serving as Exalted Ruler from 2001-2002 and the Sons & Daughters of Italy in Spring Hill, FL and Brooklyn, NY. Joe was certified Fire Official by the NJ Bureau of Fire Safety and served as Fire Official for Hopatcong, Sandyston and Sussex County. He was also the Fire Police Officer for Spring Hill, FL and a Traffic Aid for the Hernando County, FL Sheriff.
Survivors include daughter Sandra Carey and son Joseph Sacco, Jr.; sons Michael Weber, Jeffrey Weber, Timothy Weber and Joseph Corpuz; daughters Lauren Maloney and Kathleen Weber; daughters-in-law Christine Weber, Gale Sacco and Donna Catapano; son-in-law Brian Sullivan; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; sister Terry Zimmerman, brothers Thomas Sacco, Anthony Sacco and Louis Sacco and sisters-in-laws Ruth Sacco, Xiomora Sacco and Tonya Sacco and brother-in-law Fred Zimmerman.
Joe's Life Celebration will include visiting hours on Friday October 24 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing, NJ. A prayer service will be offered Saturday October 25 beginning at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Friends and family may begin gathering at 9:30 AM Saturday morning at the funeral home. Joe will be laid to rest next to his late wife Carolyn at First Presbyterian Cemetery in Succasunna, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Joe's memory to a charity of your choice.
