Obituary of Richard "Dick" Heller
Born to Carl and Trudy Heller, Richard grew up on Carteret Street in Newark, sharing a home with his maternal grandparents, Richard and Clara Magwood.
He served in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer escort near the end of the Korean conflict and remained active with the Tin Can Sailors and his VFW post. A passionate historian and marksman, Richard collected and restored antique rifles from every major U.S. war and competed in big bore rifle matches, including as a member of the Marine Corps Rifle Team at Picatinny Arsenal.
Known for his upbeat spirit and love of fun, Richard cherished time at his family's 1836 one-room brick schoolhouse, enjoying hikes to High Rocks, fishing at South Pond, and evenings by the campfire with friends, stories and Schaefer beer.
He is survived by his children Don, Jim, and Sandy; grandchildren James, Kristen, Kate, and Corey; and great-grandchildren Isabella, Enzo, Zackery, and Damion He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
