
Obituary of James Michael O'Brien
James Michael O'Brien, 79, of Hopatcong, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 1, 1946, in New York City, he was the beloved son of the late James O'Brien and Helen (Sullivan) O'Brien.
James attended Rutgers University and earned his DPW Leadership Certification. Early in his career, he held a management position with Con Edison in New York City. He later became a proud business owner, operating Dig We Will Construction Company and Jimmy O's Deli, where he built lasting friendships within the community. Most recently, he worked as an inspector at Van Cleef, continuing his strong work ethic and dedication.
A resident of Hopatcong for 52 years, James was a faithful member of St. Jude's Church for over five decades. He was actively involved in the St. Jude's Church Fundraising Committee and the Hopatcong Seniors, always giving his time generously. His commitment to charity work reflected his deep compassion and love for helping others.
James found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. He loved listening to music, traveling, especially going on cruises and creating lasting memories with those he loved most. His warmth, humor, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family and faith will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
James was a devoted husband to Margaret, his wife of 57 years, and a proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret; his children James (Cindy), Margaret Kurnides (Mickey), and Anne Crouch (Tom); his cherished grandchildren Jordan, Kate, James, Emily, Joseph, Maura (Jordan), Brady (Natalie), Hannah (Max), Connor, and Sierra; and his great-granddaughter Savannah. He is also survived by his sisters Denise Kruger, Maureen De'Angelis, and Helen O'Brien. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jack.
James Life Celebration will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 from 3 to 7pm at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing, NJ. A Liturgy of Christian burial will be said on Wednesday, February 19 at 10am at St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 40 Maxim Drive, Hopatcong, New Jersey. James will be laid to rest at Stanhope Union Cemetery, Mt. Olive Twp.
