Obituary of Alan D. Rubenstein
Alan D. Rubenstein, 86, of Mt. Arlington, passed away on Wednesday May 20, 2015 at his home.
Born in Weehawken, NJ, Alan grew up in West New York, NJ where he graduated from Memorial High School in 1945. He earned his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in 1949 and also received his Juris Doctorate of Law from Rutgers in 1952, thereafter serving in the United States Army. Alan was an attorney in Roxbury for more than 50 years and resided in the Lake Hopatcong area since the mid 50's. He was a member of Roxbury Rotary, the Roxbury Historical Society and the Roxbury Chamber of Commerce. Alan was passionate about Lake Hopatcong. He was part owner of the historic Kilcare Castle (aka Windemere Castle) and also resided in the connecting boat house in summer. It was important to him to enjoy the lake and care for it.
He was a supporter of theater, writing and producing more than a dozen original plays. He was a co-founder of the Chester Theater, and the founder of the Bell and Barter theater in Rockaway. Sports was also a focus. Alan excelled in basketball, baseball and tennis and earned 6 varsity letters at Rutgers University (baseball and basketball) and after college played professional AAA baseball but decided against a continued career in baseball. Later in life he spent time researching local state boundaries, collecting maps and postcards, attending auctions, volunteering in the community while continuing law practice into his 80's.
Alan is survived by his devoted wife, Faith (Sweetser), a son, David and wife, Becky, two grandchildren Grace and David, a sister, Ann Margot Schwartz and two brothers, Richard and Donald and wife, Roselyn. Joel, his brother, pre-deceased him.
Alan's Life Celebration will include visiting on Sunday May 24 from 4-7 PM at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing, NJ. A memorial service will be offered at 6PM. He will be laid to rest following a graveside service on Tuesday May 26 at 10am at Stanhope Union Cemetery in Mt. Olive Township.
