Obituary of William Abernathy

William C. Abernathy of Hopatcong, NJ passed away on Monday, September 12th at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 82 years old. William was born on October 31, 1933 in Jersey City, NJ to the late William and the late Wilolla (Young) Abernathy. He served in the US Marine Corps and he was a machinist by trade. William enjoyed fishing, boating, motorcycle riding and his good neighbors. He was a longtime resident of Hopatcong and member of the Knee Deep Club and the American Legion. William is survived by his sister, Doris Ryan, his devoted nieces, Joyce Koch (Edward), Karry Rosenberg (Rob), Debbie Vander Velde, Dina French (Steven), Laurie Wilson and Barbie Smith, his devoted nephews, Robert Vander Velde and Ken Vander Velde (Maureen). Additional survivors include many cherished great nieces and great nephews and his faithful feline companion, Bandit. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Lorraine in 2013, his sisters, Claire Vander Velde and Elaine Abernathy, his nephew, Bruce Vander Velde, his dog, Crystal and his cat, Smokey. All services were entrusted to the Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home of Landing, NJ. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
