Obituary of Melvin H. Applegit

Melvin H. Applegit, Sr. of Kenvil passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville. He was a World War ll veteran technician fourth grade serving in the United States Army service company 782nd Tank Battalion. A loving man who cherished family and living life to the fullest, he especially enjoyed spreading happiness and laughter. He was 92. Born in Kenvil he was a lifelong resident. In his early years he worked as a powder cutting operator at Hercules Powder Company and then a machinist at Picatinny Arsenal. He then worked as a mechanic for Ferriero Hudson Motors Sales in Mt. Tabor and then a parts manager at Ferriero Motors Chrysler Plymouth in Parsippany. His last 35 plus years before retirement were spent as a parts manager at Grecco Lincoln Mercury in Denville. Melvin was also known as "everyone's favorite local mechanic". During his retirement years he spent treasured time with family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0091 in Wharton, the Mason Lodge #20 in Dover and the Salaam Shriners of Livingston. Melvin enjoyed building and flying model air planes, fixing anything that needed fixing, bowling, fishing, hunting, working and helping his family and friends. Beloved husband for over 70 years of the late Ida May (2012). Devoted father of Jill Gillette and her husband Dale M. Jr. and the late Melvin H. Applegit Jr. (2007). Dear father-in-law of Lucille Applegit. Dear brother of Violet Indyk and the late Laura Jayne and Henrietta Arico. Cherished "Pop" of Melissa, Jamie and Douglas Gillette and "Grandpa" of Mark Applegit and his wife Michele. "G-Pa" of Megan and Matthew Applegit. Dear uncle of Michelle Ostek and her husband Craig, James O'Dell and his wife Karen and Linda Connor and her husband Robert and many other nieces and nephews. "Chief" and friend of Franny. Also survived by his sweet lovable dog Abby.
