Obituary of Michael Mercadante

Michael Mercadante, 80, of the Lake Hopatcong section of Jefferson Township, passed away, peacefully, on Tuesday March 12, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 12, 1938 in San Michele di Pratola Serra, Avellino, Italy to the late Alfonso and Giuseppina Mercadante, Michael came to the United States on May 3, 1961 and lived with family in South Orange prior to marrying his wife Antoinette and moving to Elizabeth and then Irvington for 33 years before becoming a resident of Lake Hopatcong 16 years ago.

He first worked as a mason for Anthony Mercadante Construction Co., then was employed by NJ Rolling Mills Sheet Metal Co., McMillian Blodel Paper Co. and lastly as a flag cutter for Annin Flag Co. in Verona, NJ before retiring.  Michael enjoyed gardening, making wine and sauce, but most importantly, spending time with his family.  He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Lake Hopatcong.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 57 years, Antoinette (Sapia)Mercadante, two daughters, Josephine Kahwaty and husband, Michael and Lisa Schultz and husband, Daniel, four grandchildren, Anthony, Rebecca, Nicole and Michela and a brother, Antonio Mercadante.

Michael was predeceased by two brothers, Luigi and Ciriaco Mercadante.

Michael’s Life Celebration will include viewing on Thursday March 14 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing, NJ.  A funeral Mass will be offered on Friday March 15 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Lake Hopatcong.  Relatives and friends may gather at the funeral home Friday morning at 9:30 AM prior to Mass.  Michael will be laid to rest at Gate of Heaven Chapel Mausoleum in East Hanover.  For donations in loving memory of Michael, please consider www.cancercare.org.
