I am so late in finding out this distressing news. I have been out of the loop for some time since moving away from town years ago. I coached in the Randolph Program for 8 years after spending time coaching in 3 other Programs. I came to know John in training classes where he indoctrinated new coaches. He was pleasant and detailed. I was impressed with his knowledge and overall grasp of building success. Though I played football since very young and coached later I have never been so blessed to have the opportunity to have been surrounded by a program that was so focused on success. It was curriculum of faith, responsibility, confidence, Work ethic, planning and preparation which I had never seen at this level in my pass experience. He raised a player one spirit at a time. "Building each student builds the program". There was so much detail on the treatment of players and concern for their individual growth. I learned much more than x's and O's. I took in every breath of the concepts I was taught in Randolph. I was there for the State streak and was there for "The Game" when the team pulled off the miraculous field goal with seconds left in the game. No detail was ever to small. I met with John on occasions to firm up details on my game plan on a few occasions. He was ALWAYS pleasant and made time to meet. John Bauer Sr was the Subject and John R Bauer was the predicate to one of the most exciting times in Randolph History of sports . They built a program that overcame any adversity. John WAS a tactical genius. He turned football preparation into a study in Social Science and geometry. I have always thought well and stopped to greet him when he was at Livingston and also at Lenape with Coach Smolyn. I coached Chris Coach Smolyn's son as well. Being a coach in Randolph was being part of the family. That is why the bond was so strong. I could write a great deal more. I have always spoken of John as my mentor whenever anyone asked me about the Randolph experience. I can not say enough about the impact that he played in many students lives and coaches and parents as well. God Speed John. My best to the Bauer family. Please accept my condolences. I found out about this just recently when watching a YouTube presentation of the Lenape vs Newton game. I was blind sided by the announcement and greatly saddened. Two years back I was having a conversation with a a high school AD where my grandson was playing and John's name came up. He mention that he had just spoken to John not to long ago Prior. We laughed and both exchanged appreciation for John during the conversation. To the family. You all must be totally an amazing family to have loaned John to all of us. It says great things about the family as well. 2020 was a very busy and unusual year and i was in a state of flux from May 2020 onward and totally distracted with changes and adjustments in my family. I lost my Mom in January 2019 and that year was a blur at this point. It was a major loss to our family as she was the rock still standing after my Dad passed on. My prayers go out to your nuclear family as well as all of us who were included in the Randolph family. many Blessings to all.... Regards... Bill Turner

I am so sad to hear of John's passing. Please accept my condolences. John and I were teammates on the Roxbury football and basketball team in the 60's. His Dad was our coach. Mr. Bauer always called John Smitty in practice so he wouldn.t show preference. I moved away after my sophmore year and lost touch with John. But the good times we shared will be with me forever. Again so very sorry for your loss. I was so lucky to have him as a friend if only for a short time.
Sincerely
John Burnett

To the entire Bauer family,
I am so sorry to hear that the world lost such a great person. As a former football player from Randolph, Coach Bauer Jr. taught me so many valuable life lessons. Our first time meeting was right after I had chicken pox which caused me to miss the first two weeks of weightlifting my sophomore year. I talked back to Coach Bauer and he flashed his sly smile back while the reaction of the others let me know I made a mistake and also conveyed the level of respect he had earned. Remembering how Friday summer practices would never run too late because he had a "hot date" with his wife always reminds me of his family first commitment. I could go on for pages about his attention to detail and his other wonderful attributes but long story short much of my successes in life are because of some of those learned lessons. Talking recently with a student of his history class that did not play sports reminded me that Coach Bauer Jr. was more than a legendary coach. He cared about people and reading his obituary provided a little more insight to the man, from son to husband, father, and grandfather. I'm sorry I didn't get to know Coach better in adulthood but his positive influence and lessons learned are remembered. As I pay it forward his memory will go on. And those I am able to influence will pay it forward and thus continue to give a bit of what he provided for future generations.

Words cannot express the sorrow my family and I feel. Coach Bauer has been an integral part of my life for more than 20 years. He mentored me, taught me what it meant to compete with integrity and honor, and above all demonstrated with each day that he lived, the power of humility. Our thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences go out to the Bauer family.

Dear Donna and family, Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather John. John will be remembered for being a good neighbor and a better father. I loved talking to him about his yard and the way he kept it beautiful. I don't know but I think Uncle Birdie had a huge influence on him. You are all in my prayers.
