Benito Gallara

Obituary of Benito Enrico Gallara

Benito Enrico Gallara, born on May 22, 1936, in Caccamo, Palermo, Sicily, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished son of Margherita and Giorgio Gallara.

A proud veteran of the Italian Army, Benito's life was forever changed when he met the love of his life, Giuseppa Delfini. The two eloped and were married on January 11, 1965, and two years later, in 1967, embarked on a new journey together to the United States, where they would build a family and a life full of love. They initially resided in Morristown, New Jersey eventually moved to Hopatcong, and subsequently Frelinghuysen, where Benito spent his final days.

In his early years Benito worked at PSE&G and retired at Isolatek International in Netcong, New Jersey. His strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were always evident.

Beyond his work, Benito found joy in simple pleasures: hunting, fishing, crabbing, gardening, making wine, taking beach vacations with his RV, and taking drives - especially when it meant buying lottery tickets, or heading to the casino to play the penny slots (no more than 20 cents at a time). His grandchildren fondly remember him as "Pop Pop," a loving grandfather who delighted them with stories from Italy, which he remembered with great detail. He loved being around family playing Italian card games, sitting in his garage listening to his Italian music, relaxing outside enjoying nature, and adored his flower and vegetable gardens.

Benito is predeceased by his sisters Cecilia and Assunta; and his brothers Giuseppe, Rosario, Salvatore, Francesco, Giorgio, and Mario Carmelo. He is survived by Giuseppa, his wife of 59 years; his brother Angelo; and his sister, Mother Superior, Geltrude Gallara. Benito leaves behind his devoted children, Margherita Greer, Frank Greer, Giovanni Gallara, Sarah Guiles, as well as his adored grandchildren, Joseph, Julia, and Marcella. His passing is also mourned by a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and dear friends who will always remember his warm smile.

A man of deep love and loyalty, Benito's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit, stories, and life lessons will continue to inspire and comfort his family and friends.
