Born in Brooklyn, NY on January 6, 1935 to the late Joseph and the late Maria (Farrenkopf) Thurnes. Rudy grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens, where he attended Catholic school through college. In 1956, he graduated Fordham University and began his service in the Army Reserves. He launched his accounting career at Crane and Company in Queens, where he met the love of his life, Marie. Once married, they moved to NJ, where he worked as an accountant for Hewlett Packard. He was called to deploy to Fort Benning, Georgia, where his family relocated for the next several years. Upon returning to NJ, Rudy continued his accounting career, and prior to retirement, became the CEO for Robert McKeown. He was very active in the National Association of Accountants, holding many board positions before becoming President of the organization. Rudy and his late wife, Marie resided in Rockaway, NJ, then moved to Landing in 1993, where they built their dream home on the lake.
Rudy was a long time, active parishioner of St. Clement Pope & Martyr Roman Catholic Church in Rockaway, NJ. He played an integral part in the planning committee for the inception and construction of the church, became a trustee, financial advisor, and ushered weekly for the parish. Rudy enjoyed coaching baseball, fishing, boating, watching the Mets, playing the accordion, and instilling a love for music with his family, but most importantly, he loved spending time with his devoted family and friends. He made sure to attend all sporting events and concerts for his four grandchildren.
Rudy is survived by his son, Glenn Thurnes (Donna), his daughter, Renee DeLuca (Michael), and his cherished grandchildren, Nicole Stafford (Sean), Loren DeLuca, Ryan Thurnes (Adora) and Brad Thurnes (Hannah). He was predeceased by his beloved wife Marie on September 2, 2023.
