Rich and I met somewhere around 8 and 9 years old. We became best friends. We went from playing in a sandbox, to video games and computers, to riding his mini bike, to video games and computers , to partying in wildwood, to video games and computers , to being husbands and fathers and to video games and computers. In Fact, I spent two great days with Rich recently, and to no surprise, what we did was work on his computer so that we could play video games.
Beyond being great friends, Rich and the entire Grey family had a tremendous positive impact on my life. Rich is the one that got me started on computers and now I support my family working at something I love. Mr. (Jack) Grey's love of the latest gadgets fueled our computer habit. Mrs. Grey was (and is) so pleasant. She always fed me. I especially loved staying over for dinner and playing games of Milton Bradley's Dark Tower.
What I have next is a collection of memories with Rich. Let me share some of those memories
• Playing Intellivision (especially Sea Battle and Triple Action)
• Atari computers, bulletin board systems and the enormous phone bills they created. This was before the world wide web was invented.
• Walking to Rockaway Townsquare mall to type the "guess a number from 1 to 100" program Rich wrote for me.
• The first double density Atari 800 disk of games Rich gave me. I still have it!
• Creating our very own cartoon with your dad's video camera. I think I dropped and broke it. Sorry Mr. and Mrs. Grey!
• Rides on the mini bike to the sand pits. The chain kept breaking. We always ended up pushing that thing back home. Remember how the gas tank would come loose, spray us with gas and how Rich always zapped your finger on the spark plug when trying to turn it off.
o Rich, Remember how much smoke that thing made because we mistakenly connected the gas to the exhaust hose! It would smoke out the whole neighborhood.
• Flying off the bike several times
o Rich, Remember that time we were coming down Irondale road onto Gallagher and the car cut us off in front of Jamie's house. I still have the scars from when we hit the sidewalk and I got launched out of the paper basket onto Jamie's driveway. You most certainly saved our lives by steering us into the sidewalk or at least our faces.
• The paper routes and how we blasted Joan Jett's I love rock and roll, on a big boom box, during the routes. Whenever I hear that song, I think of Rich.
o Oh, by the way Rich, thanks again for handling that bully on my route. He never bothered me again. I'm still not sure what you said (or did) to him. You'll have to fill me in some day.
o Eagle eyes and out buried treasure on top of Old Irondale road!
• Stopping by Winkies tavern to play asteroids with all our paper route money.
• Playing Iron Maiden, Kiss and Judas Priest music as we walked to Heden Park in Dover.
• Building a tree house in my tree. Correction, building an ugly tree house in my tree. My dad made me take it down. The day we finished it.
• Walking to school In Wharton and playing team tag and that team tag misunderstanding we had.
• Driving to Morris Hills high school in your grandma's old blue car. (remember how we backed it into a tree driving up and down the driveway before you had a license?)
• Painting your Dad's store. And buying a color TV for the Atari computer with it.
• Trips to Seaside Heights and Wildwood NJ (with stops at Atlantic city)
I sure miss Rich, he will live on in my heart.
Your friend and BFF,
Pete
