John Farrell

Obituary of John J. Farrell

John J. Farrell, Jr., known to many as "Doc", 89, passed away on Sunday December 7, 2008 at Hackensack University Medical Center. Born in Newark, John was the son of the late John J. and Mary (Fitzsimmons) Farrell, Sr. He resided in Newark until 1980 when he moved to Hopatcong. He was a graduate of West Side High School in Newark. John worked as a Barge Captain for the Pennsylvania Railroad for over 40 years. He served in the US Army during World War II. During that time he was stationed in Casablanca, Italy and France. John was a member of the Holy Name Society, Hopatcong Senior Citizens and the Veterans of Foreign War. John liked his sports. He coached CYO Basketball and Little League Baseball. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed watching college basketball and college football, but his real passion was baseball. Even though he was a huge Boston Red Sox fan, he would watch any and all baseball games that he was able to just because of his love for the sport. Every year after the World Series ended, he'd already start counting down the days until the new season began. One of the many great joys in his life was that he was able to see the Red Sox not only win one World Series, but two in his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Mary (Daly), as well as, his son Kevin, his daughter Barbara Koneski, his grandson Paul Brian and his brother, Thomas. John is survived by his children, Maureen Stella and her husband, Anthony of Mine Hill, John J. Farrell III and his wife, Janet of Manahawkin and Colleen Ohaus and her husband, Gerry of Hackensack with whom he needed to reside with during his illnesses. He is also survived by his sister Marie of Rockaway, his son-in-law John Koneski and his wife, Margaret of Cranford, his sisters-in-law Jean Farrell of Manchester, Kitty Daly of Kearny and Gloria Daly of Manahawkin, his grandchildren, Michelle Baldino and her husband, Filippo, Anthony Stella, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, Erin Stella, James Koneski, and Andrew Koneski and his great grandson Marco Baldino. He will also be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
