Obituary of Lorenz A. Oster

On October 16, 2008, Lorenz A. (Larry) Oster, 87, left this earth to join his loving wife Ellie, who passed in 2006. He was born in 1921 to Mary (Meyer) and Nicholas Oster, the youngest son of eleven children. Larry served in the US Navy during World War II, then was employed by the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a hard-hat diver until they closed in 1964, and worked on the waterfront for the Army Corps of Engineers until he retired in 1976. He lived in Astoria and Ridgewood NY, Hopatcong NJ and Bonita Springs FL. Larry was a gentle, humble and religious man with simple needs and a great sense of humor. In his day, he could build anything, make anything, fix anything and spent much of his life volunteering his skills at local churches and hospitals. He especially enjoyed making costumes and creating "junk art". He loved the great outdoors and had a deep respect for nature and spent many happy hours hiking, camping, swimming, boating and fishing with his wife, children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing piano, softball, tennis and a good hand of cards. He is survived by his daughter Janet Carter and her husband Lou Turse of Hopatcong; his son Lawrence Oster and wife Martha of Penobscot ME; his grandsons Daryl and Nick Carter (both of Hopatcong); his siblings Louise Vigoriti, Rita Rafferty and Edward Oster (all of NY); also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family. He will be cremated. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to join the family to celebrate the life of this wonderful man at the Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing on Tuesday October 21 from 6-9:PM. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Jude's RC Church, 40 Maxim Drive, Hopatcong at 10: AM the following morning, Wednesday October 22.
