Obituary of Henry Harjes

Henry Harjes, 81, of Landing NJ died Wednesday September 17, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family after a year long struggle with cancer. Henry was born on August 7, 1927 in Seehausen, Germany. As a teenager, he was conscripted into service with the German RAD during World War II, surviving the war to enter apprenticeship as a baker in post-war Germany. In 1953 he earned his Meisterbrief in Germany to become a Master Baker. Henry came to the United States in 1954. He continued as a baker and became involved with a large number of US-German social and charitable societies during the 1950's and 1960's in New Jersey and New York. In 1959, Henry became a member of the Free Masons, beginning a strong life-long association with that fraternity and devoting his considerable energy toward their charitable works. From 1980 through 1993, Henry and his wife Anneliese owned and operated the Landing Dairy Bar, becoming well known throughout the Lake Hopatcong area. Henry retired in 1993 to devote his attention more fully to the Free Masons, his wood working and traveling with his family. Henry is survived by his devoted wife Anneliese (nee: Siemer) of 49 years, daughter Karen of Hoboken, son Richard and wife Kathryn of Belgrade MT, son Oskar and his partner Katherine of Salisbury CT and 3 grandchildren.
