Bob and I were each others first best friends in elementary school, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Maplewood. In addition to his tutoring me on the fine arts of fishing, be also taught me the fine arts of garbage picking, walking through open sewers to follow streams of water, playing darts and the world of great beers. His mother was a very kind and understanding woman. One of my most delightful memories is he and I in 1971, smoking pot in his basement, and tripping off to the existential Led Zepplin song, "Stairway to Heaven". We both felt deep peace. He also turned me on to wonderful hallucinogenic herbs and mushrooms. And we both had discussions about the nature of God. His most memorable statement was, "God has got to be at least as good as a great friend". There will never be another Robert J. Neals! I trust Bob, that you now have plenty of students in heaven, who you are helping to enjoy a better life, from fishing to tripping. And even garbage picking.

I was shocked to see Bobby's name on the list of those deceased who graduated in my 1972 IHS class. I wish I had gotten to know him better. How I knew of Bobby: I believe he had a crush on me at the last high school dance prior to graduation, but I was too shy, turned my attentions to someone else at the dance who didn't know I existed, and blew my chances. The only time I saw Bobby again was the signing of our year books when he wrote in mine & read by me after he left the school that he wish he had gotten to know me better. I had hoped to run into him again after school ended but didn't know how to reach him. I believe it was Bobby who apparently threw a snowball at me while I was on my porch back east. He kept walking and that last I saw of him. Over the years, I wondered what happened to him, and on our clasmates.com site I always periodically typed his name to see if he joined. An email recently sent to me about a class reunion included a list of 1972 classmates now deceased. Read the obituary & found he, like I loved fishing. Small world. To think of people all these years and then find out they are gone, it's so sad. Now I know why I couldn't find Bobby listed on classmates.com, or not at the times I've looked. I constantly think about the loss of Bobby & reading what a wonderful husband & father he was, I know he lived life to the fullest & with love. I can see he was well loved, and that makes me happy to hear. God be with you Bobby and to your family.

Bob and Jean,
Farewell old friend, I will remember the many days fishing with you on the streams for trout, the lakes for whatever we could catch and of course the many trips on my fathers boat the Amy Sue for stripers, blues, false albacore and blackfish. I'll always remember my first and only bonito I ever caught while fishing with you at the Mud hole chumming. Delicious!
Jean, I am very sorry for you loss. Please let me know if you ever need help with anything. My Cell is 973-670-1355.
Sincerely,
Dave Shepherd

Bob really touched me in a special way. He is one of those men that by his presence can make a difference. He deeply loved his wife and anyone he spent any time with would know that. The fish are probably relieved though. Rest well Bob, you deserve it. God has seen fit to call you home.
