I knew Phil when I lived and taught in Milford, Pa. He had so much talent and when I moved to Texas I lost touch with him. I was just looking at a piece of pottery and remembered it was his, so I looked him up. Then I found this. Wow. So sad. He was an amazing talented man.

My friendship with Phil started way back in 1981 when I was a freshman at Hopatcong High school. During my years in school, he was the best teacher I have ever known. He had a gift for seeing the talent in a kid and then giving the kid the confidence to see it for themselves. I took every art class available just to learn from him. After I graduated, I moved to the west coast, but we kept in touch and he had been a mentor to me all these years. I am shattered to learn of his passing. My heart goes out to his family. You have lost an amazing soul who touched so many lives, and enriched every single one. I will never forget him. Peace, love and light to you all.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I am one of the many fortunate people to have known Phil. I worked with him at the high school, and he made me smile each day. I advised the literary magazine, and Phil went out of his way to help me by giving me artwork and photos to publish. I was a new teacher - and Phil helped me learn the ropes. So, I can only say that Phil was there for me, for the students, for his friends, and most importantly, for his family. God bless you. Phil was one in a million! Rest in peace.

My condolences to the Hirlemann family on their loss. Mr. Hirlemann was my high school photography teacher and although I was never a good or great student Mr. H always made me feel a sense of pride in the work I did in his class. Beyond the classroom Mr. H spent a lot of his time mentoring his students on life and sharing stories of Asbury Park and South Jersey when they were cool; you know back in his day. He was and always will be a loving, caring, selfless man who cared for others around him even when he wasn’t at his best. Mr. H you will be sorely missed, THANK YOU for the memories and the talks!
