Dear Dennis - I've been thinking about you - as I often do. I saw today that you passed away - and it hit me pretty hard. I've been totally neglectful of our friendship - and will always feel guilty about that... Where did the time go?
We were best buds from about 6th to 9th grade! Any day during that time found me at your house or you at mine. I remember so many things that we did together! You were my personal hero! You probably didn't know that - I always looked up to you. I particularly remember one time something hit you square in the nose - and you just brushed it off like it was nothing.
We went to Richard Spoonhoward's house in Jersey City (we called him "Shorty" - politically incorrect and all). I think we went there twice - stayed overnight maybe 2 nights. Shorty's parents worked in an all night restaurant - so one time we waited until after they left - then took the train into NYC and spent the night roaming the streets! People watching at Port Authority. Another time we went to Coney Island during the day. We thought we were hot stuff - we went on the little roller coaster - and it was so tame - we immediately went on the biggest one. Mistake - scared the stuffing's out of me! We sat in the last car and were almost thrown out as the train went over each hill. Also went on the Bobsled Run ride and the Parachute ride... Went on the Staten Island Ferry for a nickel... You also suffered from Hay Fever - and sneezed so much we made you sleep on the fire escape!
We met Shorty at Church Camp. We were there together in 8th grade. No idea where my parents got the money to send me. We both had girlfriends - mine from back home - Judy - and you found someone there. She was from Clifton, I remember that. I actually remember all the camp songs. ... and our skit...
We were on the same Senior League Baseball Team. Your father was one of our coaches. You played first base and I played outfield. We hiked to the mica mine.... Tried to dam up the river.... Probably did a lot of things we shouldn't have... Sometimes, just hung out.
You were with me when we both made a somewhat fateful choice Freshman year. In the spring of that year there was a track meeting in the cafeteria and a baseball meeting in the gym. We talked this over - and realized that (there was no JV or freshman baseball team) we would probably sit the bench if we played baseball. So we decided to try track (I had one more year of Senior League Baseball - you had two). Of course, I found the ideal medium for me! You played football and baseball - I stayed with track and played soccer. I think that's where we each went our separate ways - just doing different things. But we were always (and will be always) good friends!
After HS graduation, I didn't see you until my sister's funeral. ...and I was so glad to see you!! I think you had just got out of the Air Force. ...and I didn't see you again until our 45th high school reunion. I felt so good about seeing you after all those years, I actually sent you a letter! I missed you at the PLHS 50th - and now... I know I didn't see you - but I was always assured knowing you were there. And following Gail on Facebook helped keep me a little in touch. I will miss you but I will always remember...
I often watch the movie Stand by Me and think of you and me... Especially the last statement in the movie: "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"
