Uncle Joe was a character! I will never forget his trips to Maine or staying at his and Aunt Pat’s house in New Jersey. When Jacob, Tori, and I were younger, he was referred to as the “tickle monster”. At my grandmothers, we’d squeal and run yelling the tickle monster has arrived! I remember lots of laughs when he was around, both as a kid and as an adult. His sense of humor was memorable, as well as his kind heart. I can practically hear his voice saying, “how ya doing hunny?” I will miss him greatly and will cherish every memory.

Oh Joe! He was a character. They could have made a TV comedy series after him. He always had that little snicker after he said something funny. It's making me laugh now just remembering it. He would always reach for me when the perfect 'dipping' song came on at our '1960 basement' parties to do a gigantic dip, consequently the name "The Big Dipper" which came to an abrupt end at a party in Naples when he did indeed dip me to the floor and then some!
What a void he is leaving in everyone's heart...from his lifetime friends such as us (who could forget the trip to Ireland), his firemen friends, his yacht club and boating friends and neighbors and especially his family and you dear Pat, especially you. He will be in my prayers for a safe trip to heaven and you my forever friend, I'll be thinking of you and here if you need me.

Larger than life was what Joe Cahill was. Always smiling and quick with wit, his laugh was contagious. The grandfather of our niece and nephews, our boys also fondly referred to him as "Papa Joe". He had a way of making everyone feel special and welcomed. His presence will be greatly missed at our family gatherings as there is no filling the void of a guy with a heart as big as his. But we will toast to his memory often (with blush wine) and share laughs, smiles and tears for years to come. Have a drink with my Dad, Joe - CHEERS!

To Pat and the families of Brian & Tommy, we extend our heartfelt sympathy with much love and fond memories.
Carol and I particularly remember going to Long Island and Joe navigating his boat to and from a local bar and announcing the new nickname of “Long Island Carol”. We had a delightful evening, one of the hottest on record, which Joe made sure all the windows were open at the home cottage when we got back … unfortunately, not realizing the storm windows were still down. Many a fun evening was enjoyed in Whippany, with many friends and families. Lots of laughs, stories, practical jokes… practically thanks to Joe’s sense of humor. We will all miss Joe very much, and will always have a warm smile remembering his never ending sense of humor. Fondly, Dan & Carol Walker

My Uncle Joe! This man was my second father. He and Tante Pat were my friends parents before I was born. Thats probably close to 60 years of family and friendship. I have so many special memories it's hard to name them all. He called me his daughter and loved to joke and tease me always:). I was just a lousy little kid he'd say but always lovingingly. That was just his way. Long Island boat trips, crabbing on the dock, fireman spaghetti night, football parties in the back room, and bumper pool in the basement. Falling alsleep on all the coats in the bedroom after a house party until it was time to go home. Later years, visits at Lk hopatcong on party boat rides with my kids, burger and dogs on the grill and stories of his past adventures as a fireman and the good old days. He even grilled my husband before we got married as a concerned "dad" of his intentions for me. I will miss you Uncle Joe, your smile, your giggle type laugh , and your big heart. I will hold all those special memories close to my heart always. I know you will be looking down on me your lousy little kid with a smile.

From the time I was young, Uncle Joe was larger than life. I always looked forward to the times he would visit our family in Maine or when we would travel to NJ. Uncle Joe was a teaser. I may have been a bit gullible to believe that he used to sleep in the shed in Whippany. We played that joke out for many years, long after I realized he was pulling my leg. In fact, Aunt Pat recently sent me a pic of Uncle Joe sitting in his garage hanging out like that’s where he lived. For years, we also laughed about the time he delivered our “puppy”. Happy was supposed to be a puppy my parents asked him to pick up on one of his trips to Maine. When the doorbell rang and we opened it to see Uncle Joe, it was quite a surprise in itself. Him holding a full grown (plump) Springer Spaniel in his arms was a whole other surprise - especially for my parents who thought they were getting us a puppy. One joke moved onto another through the years and our latest, in our more “mature” years was a sound effect/ thumbs down we shared back and forth about going downhill as we age. He had a sense of humor always, even when his health was not the best. I feel blessed to have many great memories of Uncle Joe and will hold them close in my heart always.

Pat and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Joe was a great man who was loved by all. My favorite memory will always be when Kim, Donna and I stooped by your house on the jetski during halloween dressed in our chicken and cow costumes. May your fond memories comfort you during this difficult time.
Love, Margaret Hipwelll
