Obituary of Joseph Evan Cahill

Joseph Evan Cahill of Roxbury Twp., NJ passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at home. He was 81 years old. Joseph was born on December 16, 1938 in Newark, NJ to the late Hugh and the late Anna (Caldwell) Cahill. Joseph took great pride in his 30 year career with the Newark Fire Department and was pleased to spend his last few years with the Department assigned to the Newark Fire Boat. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. Joseph loved boating, fishing, being with friends and with his children and cherished grandchildren. Joseph lived in Roxbury Twp. on Lake Hopatcong for the past 21 years and previous to that, he lived in Whippany, NJ. Joseph boated on Long Island, on Lake Hopatcong and in the Gulf of Mexico. He was a former Board Member of the Lake Hopatcong Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society and a member of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club for twenty years. He loved Maine and for many years he and his wife, Patty owned a vacation home on Joy Bay near Acadia National Park. More recently, he and Patty enjoyed spending the winter months on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, Patricia (nee Donnelly), his sons, Brian Cahill & wife, Susan Cahill and Thomas Cahill & wife, Meg Gummere, his cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Alyssa, Emma, Patrick and Jason. Additional survivors include his brother, James Cahill & wife, Shelia and his sister-in-law, Bridgette Cahill. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Hugh Cahill. Joseph's Life Celebration will include a visitation on Tuesday, August 18th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, 150 Landing Road, Landing, NJ. Wednesday, there will be a Funeral Mass held privately at St. Therese RC Church, 151 Main Street, Succasunna, NJ. Joseph will be laid to rest privately at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to your favorite charity or to the Boonton Firemen's Home.
