My name is Art Baumgartner. I worked at FINRA, and Robert was a FINRA arbitrator. We spoke on a regular basis for many years, and we became good friends. Robert was an excellent arbitrator. He was fair, professional and extremely knowledgeable of the financial industry. He always knew how to maintain control of the proceedings even when the parties were contentious. I enjoyed speaking with Robert on a wide variety of topics. He always mentioned his wife, Judith, and his children, Eric and Kira. He loved to discuss his family, politics, the stock market, history, current events, traveling, Maine, and the military. He was very knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects. He was thoughtful, considerate, extremely intelligent, and funny. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Judith, Eric, Kira, Lexi and Family,
On the occasion of Robert’s passing, I am reminded of his many years of devoted Board service to and financial support of Camp Ma-He-Tu, in Bear Mountain, NY--an all-girls camp I enjoyed attending as a child. Robert was a champion of women campers and women sailors. He enjoyed the company of intelligent women as evidenced by the choice of his True Love and wife, Judith. Robert’s character, integrity, and reputation as a legal eagle were known to many and earned him the highest of the highly-respected Martindale-Hubbell’s Preeminent 5.0/5.0 AV Peer Review Rating. Those who knew him will miss his wise measured advice, sensitivity, gentle nature, and kindness.
More than his professional achievements, Robert was proudest of his children--Eric and Kira. With smiles and glowing terms, he chronicled each of their latest accomplishments and endeavors to his friends. Eric’s and Lexi’s recent marriage was a source of great joy to him.
The annual January 1st Flag Raising Celebration at the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club in Miami will not be the same without Robert’s clever insights and historical perspective, along with his humorous, inspiring, and hopeful starts to each New Year.
With our deepest sympathy,
Joanne & Shep

Robert and I are cousins who grew to appreciate one another even more in our later lives than we did as children.
I’ve read the remembrances friends shared, and I certainly agree on all points. He was a quintessential gentleman with contagious enthusiasm for all sorts of matters both important and arcane. We discovered that we shared a passion for U.S. History, particularly the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. I attended college there, and we had fun discussing various protagonists and locales that were factors in that event.
.
As I watched the fireworks on the East River this July 4th, I was reminded of the special night Robert chartered a boat and took a number of friends and family for an up close and personal view of the pyrotechnics. It was a celebration of Jude’s milestone birthday back then. This year I decided that the rockets of 2022 were actually a memorial marking his passing, and that brought an element of comfort along with the sense of loss.
There is no shortage of superlatives that can be applied to Robert’s life. For me, his quiet courage and determination in the face of adversity in his last months stand as an inspiration to all of us. Had we lived closer, I like to think that we’d have seen even more of one another. The times we did share were both memorable and enjoyable. His untimely departure from this life is also a reminder to appreciate and reach out to the people we hold dear while we still have the opportunity.
Rest in peace, Robert.

I always enjoyed talking to him about how the Highlands sports teams were doing. He was always so excited and supportive! I will miss waving to him as he biked through the streets of Allendale.

Judy and I met in Chicago. We were in our twenties and focused on building our careers. I was also hoping to meet the right guy to share my life. Judy said she planned never to marry. I told her I did not believe it. Some time passed and I met Jay Berger and we moved to St. Paul for a job change. Before I left, I bet Judy $75 that she would be married before she turned 35. She laughed and made some remark about easy money. A few years went by and Judy moved to New York City and I moved to Syracuse. We kept in touch. I always visited her when I had business trips to NYC. One day she wrote to ask when I was coming by again. She had a man she wanted me to meet. Oh good, I thought. I tallied up the time and figured that she was not yet 35. Great! I thought I won! I met Robert. I think we three had lunch. I was so impressed. He was such a gentleman, courteous, smart and handsome. Very low key. As an aside, when Robert left the table, I said "I can see what you have been waiting for." Naturally, she waited till she was past her 35th birthday to marry. It was a lovely wedding in Tarrytown, NY. Jay and I attended with two of our four children. In addition to a wedding gift, I gave her a check for $75. I consider it money well spent.
Ah, Judy. My most sincere condolences.

The last time I saw Robert we were sitting in his kitchen 11 months ago, having dinner and a glass of wine. His brilliant conversation and smile warmed my heart. Cheers to you Robert. I send you Light and Love to the Other side. A warm hug to dear Judith, a friend and Inspiration.

Our memories of Robert are of such a calm, kind, erudite & thoughtful man, often with a twinkle in his eye - the perfect foil for his wife Judith and such a great support for his children Kira & Eric. Robert shared in many of our significant personal milestones including our marriage & Franklin’s 40th. He kindly hosted us (+/- various guests including Bruce’s parents) numerous times in Allendale where he was always a gracious, inclusive and genuinely interested host. We feel privileged to have shared a part of Robert’s extraordinary life, however small that part might have been. May he Rest In Peace. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Judith, Kira, Eric and their extended family and friends. With all our love, Bruce & Franklin

Robert was extremely interesting person and very kind with a great smile. He loved to read and he was very fast reader. We often talked about the latest book he read. Also we talked about a “ life of an eagle” which Robert observed every day from his window, and was so fascinated.
I will never forget when he said with confidence in his voice that I will get my dream townhouse, although in a mean time I lost many, and almost lost hope, but Robert always reminded me with confidence that my dream townhouse is coming soon and I believed him and in only two weeks signed my contract on my dream townhouse. I always will cherish our conversations. Will remember his amazing smile. He will be missed. RIP Robert. Judy and family I’m very sorry for your loss.

Robert, the nerf gun wars on the staircase when I was a kid and you were a youthful adult and your bright smile that let us get away with it, your 'taking me with you' along the journey to getting family to move your way and making sure along with your wife that you had me over when I was visiting the area to keep the connection and bonds strong between family when I was in my youth, making sure that I knew where to see who for what and that it is important to build relationships with those I receive service from, your sharing the newspaper with me and having me help fill out the tough ones on the crossword from when I was very young into adulthood which I think was your secret way to build vocabulary to which I owe you a lifetime of gratitude, your encouragement to plan self-educational excursions to historic sites and museums when I was given liberty to plan weekend outings, your inspiration to put my children in baseball along with swimming instead of just soccer in the same season with no regrets because I was following their lead and their individual passion as they won regional championships and wore big smiles, your advice on national parks and historic information when traveling with my children as they got older to make our trip so much more special and the fact that you genuinely appreciated the educational journey I was on with them and helped take it to a deeper level of understanding, the serene tranquility of the hammock while my children entertained themselves with sports in your yard on my last visit with you and your family all with the quiet understanding you had for what my soul needed, the eagle feather that was waiting at the local baseball field I stopped and sat at instead of passing by because your spirit was with me and the serenity of the quiet field and that spiritual nudge not to forget my local sports booster, the first building block of funding on the neighborhood home front for the sport... for all this and more my heart is greatful and you are spiritually with me and my children. Judith picking you for a lifetime impacted me for a lifetime and the best of you is still here with us and this wonderful transcontinental family we share which often relies on your inspiration to bridge the gaps between us with technology. Here I leave my toast to you, the willing and voluntary middle man in despute resolution and the encouragesr of self-growth who connected this family and inspired us to bridge the best of both worlds at every opportunity that avails us. All this you knew in person over the multiple decades I had the privilege of knowing you and so I leave these words for family and friends to further jog their memories of your smile lighting up our days with you.
