Obituary of Albert Kessel

Albert Kessel of Kenvil, NJ passed away Sunday, December 10,2023 at Morristown Medical Center.

Al was an entrepreneur and a man of many talents. He was born in Jersey City on March 25,1934 to the late Albert and Dorothy(Kennedy) Kessel.

He earned his bachelor degree in 1966 from Montclair State University where he excelled in History and Business.

Al was a beloved teacher at Hopatcong High School for 7 years. In his later years, Al continued as a substitute teacher in Roxbury,

Al owned and operated the Governor's Inn in Hopatcong, NJ for 13 years where he enjoyed bringing top talent to the area.

Shortly after, with his wife Marylou, they followed their passion of southwest art and culture and opened Santa Fe Today in Morristown, NJ for 6 years.

Al's passion in life was music. He was a promoter, manager, musician, producer and teacher. Al played rhythm guitar, live on the radio, for over 10 years at the Heartland Hayride and then founded and produced the Hopewell Hayride where he played in the house band up until December 2023.

Al was loved by many. He was influential in the local music scene and thrived when he helped others around him accomplish their musical goals and passions.

Al was a master of his craft. Whether performing in front of a live audience, or practicing at home in his music room, he was happy.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Marylou DeMarino Kessel.

Siblings: Robert Kessel and the late Harry Kessel.

Children: Cheryl Cross, Gary Kessel (Wife Deb), Doug Kessel (Partner MaryAnn Dianna), and Tammy Walters (Husband Ken).

Grandchildren: Rick Brauer, Jaime Savarino, Greg Kessel, Brielle Kessel, Krista Kessel, Ryan Kessel, Nicole and Ashley Walters.

Great Grandchildren: Ruby & August Brauer, Grayson & Kasey Kessel, Emelia Flanagan, Peyton, Colton and Jaxon Kessel.

Brothers In Law/Sister In Law: Lou DeMarino, and Tommy & Dottie O'Donnell.

Nephews/Nieces: Stephen & Harry Kessel, TJ & Jessica Walsh and their children Melanie, Miranda and Maddox, Christopher & Alison Walsh, and Cristy & Mike Ortu and their children Francesca & Michael Jr.

Honoring Al's Wishes, no services will be held at this time.

In lieu of donations or flowers, we encourage you to spend a night out in Al's memory enjoying and supporting live music.
