He was "Dad" to Andy and George and a second Dad for me! Miss you Matty! Glad you can join Mrs. "V". I'll never forget all the ballgames we watched together on the corner TV with the fan keeping us cool in the summer. Seaver's almost no-hitter in '69 was the best. Go Mets! Love the Vesels - all! Len,
I would love to hear how you became friends with Uncle Matty someday. What a sweet comment you wrote. It's a small world isn't it? I was raised in Ledgewood as well. I didn't know about Matty's stars and purple heart either, but that's just how he was. A truly humble and kind man. He loved all of us. I remember one time when I was a little girl, Aunt Emmy and Uncle Matty were visiting our family at the Klein house on Mountain Road in Ledgewood. George, Matty's son was there as well. They were having a blast with all the kids. At one point, they tied the laces of shoes together and when I got up to walk, I fell on my face. We ALL laughed so hard. I didn't even see them do it. Of course I was ok and laughing the hardest of the bunch. The little jokes he played on us kids caused non-stop giggles. He would always leave giving us each a quarter. That was a big thing back then! It was so nice to hear of your story and remembrance of Matty. Just proves what I already knew that he was a fine man who will be missed.
Regards, Carla (Vanderbush/Klein) Silver

Carla,
Having grown up In Ledgewood in the 40's and 50's, I knew Matty, Fran, John, Kathy and JP well. I considered Matty as a super friend, mentor and probably a father figure, as he would sometimes pick me up and let me ride with him in the Roxbury police car, which was a big thrill for a 15 year old kid. Our friendship was started by a funny misunderstanding, which I'd be glad to tell you all about sometime, but it lasted for many years. In all the time I knew and loved him, he never once bragged or even talked about his heroism in the War, and I was surprised to hear about his silver and bronze stars and purple heart. Although we haven't been close or I touch for many years, I still think of him fondly, and cherish those memories of long gone days past, and offer my sincere sympathies to his family. May he Rest in Peace. He was a good'un.

My deepest sympathy to the Vessel family. I grew up down the street from the family and attended school with Andy all the way to graduation. Andy was a good friend I continue to think of often. The Vessel family as a whole were welcoming and fun. My best memory was the telephone switch lady they lived next door to. Andy and I would lay down and look into her basement windows as she worked the switchboard. Another memory is when Andy and I would draw rocket ships together and pretend we were sending them, and us, to space! Matthew will be sorely missed. My best to all... Dennis F Potten

My Godfather, Uncle Matty was always so fun to be around. I have such fond memories of him as a child and as an adult in his home in Landing. I would visit him when I was in New Jersey visiting my family and he would give me the biggest bear hugs! He immediately sat me down and made me something to eat. Insisting on it actually. Up to recently, we sent each other cards to stay in touch. I can't say enough about what a fine man Matty Vesel was. His heart was so big and he would do anything for you. I can say the same for my Godmother Edna as well. My heart is heavy, but I know they are reunited in Heaven. I also know that my mother, Katherine Oliver who recently passed this January was waiting with her Aunt Emmy and my Grandparents Fran and John for him to arrive. What a reunion it was I'm sure!!!! PS: I still chuckle at my Aunt Emmy and Uncle Matty's goat! Remember??? My condolences to the Vesel family during this sad time. With love, Carla (Vanderbush/Klein) Silver.
